A new real-time lossless data compression algorithm for ECG and PPG signals

Data compression is a useful process in tele-monitoring applications, which lesser number of bits are needed to represent the same data. In this work, run-time lossless single-channel Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals proposed, maintaining all dominant features. The data first quantized using optimal quantization level, so that fewer it, low error. Then, second order delta encoding run-length (RLE) based proposed work. A new approach ‘buffer array’ along with RLE also introduced, minimum store. This algorithm was tested on various single-lead ECG PPG available Physionet. An average ratio (CR) achieved 6.52, 3.82, 2.49 for 547 PTBDB records, 48 MITDB 53 MIMIC-II respectively. performed ECG, collected from 10 healthy volunteers AD8232 module, 125 Hz sampling frequency 10-bit resolution, resulted CR 2.34. smartphone device provided user-friendly operation. computational complications standalone operation collection, compression, transmission encouraged its implementation comparative study work previously published works proved fact better performance area patient health monitoring applications.
